Energy Relations for Sh Waves Interacting with a Frictional Contact Interface

چکیده

INTRODUCTION The reflection and refraction of horizontally polarized shear (SH) waves by a frictional contact interface that can slip has been studied by the present authors [l-3] and Miller [4-6]. If the solids are sheared, the localized slip induced by the waves is more pronounced in one direction than in the other, which leads to the interesting phenomenon of the solids creeping with respect to each other in spite of the fact that no global slip takes place [l]. The applied shear tractions do work on the creeping motion, and it is pertinent to ask whether all of this work is dissipated by friction or, conceivably, some of it is transferred to the wave motion so that the reflected and refracted waves carry more energy than the incident wave.

Phase transition of the dry friction between crystalline surfaces induced by normal load

A major source of energy dissipation and surface wear is the kinetic friction at the interfaces of sliding bodies. Traditionally, on a macroscopic scale, this undesirable effect is reduced with lubricating the surfaces by introducing oil into their interface. An interesting phenomenon, called superlubricity, has been reported on a nanometer scale where dry (without lubricant oil) fruition and w...

Wave Reflection and Refraction at the Interface of Triclinic and Liquid Medium

A Mathematical model has been considered to study the reflection and refraction phenomenon of plane wave at the interface of an isotropic liquid medium and a triclinic (anisotropic) half-space. The incident plane qP wave generates three types of reflected waves namely quasi-P (qP), quasi-SV (qSV) and quasi-SH (qSH) waves in the tric...

بازتاب و شکست موج SH در مرز ناهموار بین دو محیط ایزوتروپ جانبی

The existing theory for wave propagation through a soil layer are not compatible with the real soil layers because in the theory the layers are flat and the sub-layers are parallel, while in real the soil layers are not flat and they may not be parallel. Thus, wave propagations through a corrugated interface are so important. In this paper, a two-dimensional SH-wave propagation through a corrug...

Nonlinear shear wave interaction at a frictional interface: energy dissipation and generation of harmonics.

Analytical and numerical modeling of the nonlinear interaction of shear wave with a frictional interface is presented. The system studied is composed of two homogeneous and isotropic elastic solids, brought into frictional contact by remote normal compression. A shear wave, either time harmonic or a narrow band pulse, is incident normal to the interface and propagates through the contact. Two f...

Interaction of Waves with Frictional Interfaces Using Summation-by-Parts Difference Operators: Weak Enforcement of Nonlinear Boundary Conditions

We present a high-order difference method for problems in elastodynamics involving the interaction of waves with highly nonlinear frictional interfaces. We restrict our attention to two-dimensional antiplane problems involving deformation in only one direction. Jump conditions that relate tractions on the interface, or fault, to the relative sliding velocity across it are of a form closely rela...
